When the iPhone 4S debuted, Apple’s first global smartphone, there was a bit of confusion among the contract crowd as to whether users could physically switch out the iPhone 4S’s micro-SIM card as you can with other global phones like the BlackBerry Bold and Motorola Photon 4G. SprintFeed, however, is now reporting that starting today, Sprint will lock the SIM slot on the iPhone 4S.
Apple updated their website this past Friday, and is now offering an unlocked iPhone4S that will work on any GSM network. The unlocked model is available in both black and white. Prices are $649 for 16GB, $749 for 32GB, and $849 for 64GB. No contract is required, and shipping is about 1 to 2 weeks out. Unfortunately, the unlocked device will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon and Sprint.

Right now Siri is limited to the iPhone 4S. Presumably much of the reason for that limitation is that Siri requires a lot of computing power to work. Siri co-founder Norman Winarsky told 9to5 Mac that the Siri app, originally released in early 2010, required a number of workarounds and optimizations to work well on the then-current iPhone 3GS’s 600MHz processor. Even with the significant processing boost gained from the iPhone 4S’s dual-core A5 processor, however, Apple is still calling the tech a “beta” nearly two years after its first public release.
Although Siri is far from perfect, it represents the next logical step for Apple, which has always went by the “less is more” approach when it comes to computing, decreasing the amount of time it takes to get from point A to point B. The iPad and iPhone already dwarf sales of traditional desktop and laptop computers because they work beautifully with our fingers. Going one step further and eliminating the need to even touch anything is exactly what Siri does, by using out natural voice.

The Apple iPhone 4S comes with the A5 chipset, which is the SoC that powered the iPad 2. It comes with a dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU and PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, which as we know is a pretty powerful combo.
The Apple iPhone 4S also improves on the network data speeds of its predecessor. It’s not the LTE everyone was hoping for, but 14.4 Mbps is still pretty good for most market. More importantly, however, the iPhone 4S is a true world phone, supporting both GSM and CDMA networks.
